The batteries used to power the prototype of the multimeter are actually a pack of 6 Ni-Cd cells. Some of the discharge curves (voltage vs time) measured on these packs are presented on the left. The variability of these curves can then see therein. |

The batteries used (as all the other cells in the world) are subject to a highly non-linear effect: age. As they are getting older, their discharge times are reduced, but in a non-linear manner, as shown in the left figure. |
